Police Safety Officer Addresses NEWRA Committee

Captain R. Ciccolo, District Safety Officer, Boston Police was the key speaker at the North End/Waterfront Residents’ Association (NEWNC) July 26 Public Safety Committee meeting held at Saint Leonard’s Hall.

He presented several tips on community safety and answered concerns about the quality of life in the community.

NEAA Soccer League

A fall Soccer Program for boys and girls ages 9 to 12 is being organized by the North End Athletic Association (NEAA) at Puopolo Park.

Thus far, the NEAA has three teams of eight players but are seeking for four teams with 9/10 players per team and has reopened registration for this age group until August 20.

Teams will practice on Thursdays for about an hour and play games on Saturday at either 10:15 or 11:30 AM.

Registration fee is $55 per player. Go to neaasoccer.org to enroll in the program.

Historical Society Journal

The North End Historical Society (NEHS) unrevealed its newest volume of the Journal of the North End Historical Society on July 23 at the North End Library, free to members and $20 for anyone wishing to purchase the Journal.

The articles and reviews are exclusive and not available anywhere else and sales support the volunteer-run for NEHS.

One article in the book relates to naming the local streets for the first time in 1708.

Another article is an interview with Mario DiLeo, now in his 90s, who was a North Ender, and a social worker at North Bennett Street Industrial School after World War II.

Other topics include politics during the presidency of Thomas Jefferson, gentrification in our times, “Street Corner Society” and Anthony Riccio’s “From Italy to the North End Photographs” from 1972 to 1982.

Library Seeks Community Requests

Now that the Boston North End Library is open, the staff and Friends of the Library would like to have residents’ input on what they would like to happen at the, Parmenter Street site.

Recommendations are being sought so the library can focus their energy to provide resources, furnishings and programs that the community wants to occur in the local branch.

Waterfront Coalition Hosts Mayoral Forum

A Mayoral Candidates Night was recently held by the Coalition for a Resilient and Inclusive Waterfront, a diverse alliance of more than 45 organizations from across Boston.

The focus of the Alliance is access, inclusion, resiliency and economic vitality on Boston’s harbor, islands and rivers.

The forum consisted of a 90-minute program conducted live at the Simmons Theatre at the New England Aquarium and was also live streamed online.

Moderators were Shirley Leung of the Boston Globe and Alberto Vasallo of EL Mundo Boston.

Candidates included: John Barros, City Councilors Andrea Campell, Annissa Essaibi George, Michele Wu and Acting Mayor Kim Janey.

The non-profit organization pressed issues facing the harbor and rivers to the forefront of public conversation during the 2021 municipal election.

Farmers Market Coupon Program

The Mayor’s Of Food Access (OFA) initiative has once again implemented the Farmers Market Coupon Program currently underway.

OFA has allotted $576,000 in funds to scale up the program during the summer season to support families that experience challenges to purchase the food they need and want and support small businesses participating in Farmers Market.

The program runs until October 31 and has a face value of $2.50 and comes in a package of four.

North Enders Enjoy Free Harbor Cruise

The Emily Pugliano/Bobby DeCristoforo free boat cruise held by Boston Harbor City Cruise-Long Wharf for North End residents, and they had an enjoyable night on the Harbor on Monday, August 2 and was attended by many localities.

The fabulous night was made possible by the generosity of Boston City Harbor Cruises.

The event was part of the North End Against Drugs (NEAD) and Ausonia Council #1513 Nights of Columbus Family Fund Festival.
