Jaywalking Bills Should Be Scraped

Three different jaywalking bills have been filed under the Golden Dome on Beacon Hill that will cost the abusers heavier fines.

One bill would increase the fine to $20. Another bill wants to give towns the choice to raise it to $50. Still another bill will take it one step further and making it $100 fine if caught a third time.

The bill calls for those jaywalking while using an electric device and/or wearing ear buds to face a $50 fine for a first offense, $100 for a second and $200 for a third.

Jaywalking is as common as people dropping debris on the sidewalk. Besides, who will handle the most important part of enforcement.

In the North End jaywalking is part of life and it includes tourists, diners and shoppers.

Assign someone to enforce jaywalking in the North End and there will be enough revenue to fix every bridge in the state. Well maybe not all of them.

Hopefully, these bills walked their way into the recycle bin.
