Fate of Nazzaro Center Building in the Hands of the Mayor

Sometime in the near future, the fate of the Nazzaro Community Center on North Bennet Street will solely be in the hands of Mayor Michelle Wu and various city departments.

Eventually, the Boston Center for Youth and Families (BCYF) will move to a new center being established adjacent to the Mirabella Pool on Commercial Street, leaving the old bathhouse empty and available for other things.

Many times, when a structure of this type is available it becomes some sort of housing.

However, there is a lot of community support for plans by NEW Health and the North End Music and Performing Arts Center (NEMPAC) to house some programs in the building.

On September 12 the Boston Landmarks Commission will vote on the North End Historical Society’s proposal to designate the building as a landmark, that could affect the status of the structure.

When the time comes, the mayor will be forced to make a difficult decision.

Hopefully, the community service plans prevail.
