Mayor Names Census Committee

Well in advance of the 2020 Census,  Mayor Martin Walsh has announced the complete count committee comprised of 20 people.

The group is made up of sector leaders that will work to ensure that all Boston residents are aware of the upcoming US Census, know why it is important, and they are prepared to participate.

April 1, 2020 is Census day and the City needs residents to make sure they are counted to help determine representation in Congress, Federal funding, health care programs, schools, affordable housing and infrastructure in the city.

According to the Mayor, “We want to ensure all Bostonians accounted, because all Bostonians counts. Their leadership will play a vital role in our outreach efforts.”

The Census count could provide much-needed funding for the programs and growth of the City as a whole.

Harborfront Neighborhood Alliance in partnership with Boston Harbor Now and Conservation Law Foundation held a public meeting with the topic: “Waterfront Development and your Neighborhood” with many experts.

The discussion focused on becoming a more effective advocate for accessible waterfront and to learn about Chapter 91, Mass. Public Waterfront Act.

First Ever Fire Cadet Program

A Home Rule petition has been signed by Boston Mayor Martin Walsh and approved by the Boston City Council to establish a Cadet program at the Boston Fire Department (BPD).

The ordinance also calls for providing a stable pipeline of diverse young people for future firefighter classes.

The Home Rule petition now needs the Massachusetts Legislature for final approval.

If approved, this will be the first ever Fire Cadet program.

North End Trash/Street Cleaning Changes/July 1

By now, North End residents should be aware of the City of Boston’s trash collection, recycling and street sweeping new program that begins on July 1.

Many advisories have been circulated throughout the neighborhood regarding new times and date changes.

Residential trash pickup time change will be 6 a.m. instead of 7 a.m.

Street cleaning will be moved to Fridays instead of Thursdays.

NEWNC, President Praises Paul Revere Park (Prado) Renovations

Referring to the major $3 million improvements to the Paul Revere Mall (Prado) recently completed in the North End, John Pregmon, former President of the North End/Waterfront Neighborhood Council (NEWNC) said, “The revitalization of the Prado successfully preserves the original design and historic charm of the park while also improving accessibility, increasing visibility and completing much-needed repairs to this vital open space that is enjoyed by North Enders and Freedom Trail walkers alike.”

Caution at Work Sites

As construction season continues, MassDOT reminds motorists to be aware and exercise caution around all state and municipal work zones.

While driving around work zones, motorists should slow down, pay attention and adhere to construction signage and personnel working on the job, including police officers assigned to the projects.

City Holds Two Public Meetings on Urban Renewal

Two separate public meetings were held by the Boston Planning and Development Agency to update residents on urban renewal area planning and the North Station area and to promote buildings that are better resistant to coastal flooding and sea level rise.

This meeting focused on the development of flood resilient building guidelines and resiliency zoning, a talk to experts and to provide input.

This project is part of Boston Mayor Martin Walsh’s Climate Ready Project an ongoing initiative to help the City grow and prosper in the face of climate change

The North Station meeting focused on updates to the urban renewal area that exist in between the North End and West End.
