Boston/Kyoto Sister Cities Partnership

Resigning off the Sister Cities 60th years of partnership and collaboration between Boston and Kyoto Japan took place on April 26.

A signing ceremony to renew the agreement, reflecting on the partnership and looking forward to a creative and collaborative future together were a part of the ceremony.

“Boston and Kyoto are both leaders and the life sciences and hubs for education and celebrate strong neighborhood identities,” Mayor Martin Walsh said.

Rental House Vouches Released

The release of 1,000 new rental housing vouchers for chronically homeless residents and families in Boston has taken place.

Vouchers are funded through the Federal Housing Choice Voucher cap program through the US Department of Housing and Urban Development making an increase of vouches to 13,500.

“These vouchers are more than a friend subsidy, they represent a foundation for stability, support and self-sufficiency,” Mayor Martin Walsh said.

Commuter Rail Locomotive Overhaul

The MBTA’s Fiscal and Management Control Board has exercised a contract option to initiate the overhaul of 27 additional commuter rail locomotives.

The additional overhauls are part of a strategy to improve locomotive reliability in the near term while simultaneously study ways in which the entire Commuter Rail network can function in the future through Rail Vision.

New Veterans’ Commissioner

Mayor Martin Walsh has appointed the first Puerto Rican Commissioner of Veterans’ Services, Robert Santiago, who will take on an important role by making sure veterans in the city are well supported and that their service to the country will always be appreciated, according to the Mayor.

2019 Boston Bike Program Series

A full calendar of Boston’s 2019 Bike Program Series that was expanded from May to October has been scheduled by the Boston Transportation Department.

The series will kick off on Friday, May 17 from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. with Boston’s National Bike to Work Day Festival starting at City Hall.

Fun on bike opportunities will also include the 15th annual Hub On Wheels Bike Ride in September.

“It’s great to see so many people enjoying a healthy bike ride to get to their destinations in the City,” Mayor Martin Walsh said.

CharlieCards Pick Up Locations

The City of Boston is partnering with the MBTA to offer CharlieCards at City Hall and several Boston Public Library locations.

            “I am pleased that we’re able to make it easier for Boston residents and others to pick up a CharlieCard and take advantage of the T to move around the City,” Mayor Martin Walsh said.
