NEWRA Votes down 2 A.M. Closure

Michelle Jacques Yarde explains Boston Parks Department potential projects.

As expected, based on their policy not to support any business hour expansion after 12am, the North End/Waterfront Residents’ Association voted 26-5 against a request by the owner of Goody Glover’s Restaurant, 48-50 Salem Street to expand the business closing hour from 1am to 2am, 7 days a week.

The owner claims his customers wanted to see the establishment open until 2am.

Since a new landlord has taken over the property and it wasn’t clear if a lease would be given to the restaurant, NEWRA members expressed concern about extending the hours to Goody Glover’s if the business wasn’t going to be located there.

The neighborhood organization voted 23-8 in support of a change of use of a unit behind the existing restaurant (formally Ida’s) 1 Mechanic Court from residential to restaurant in connection with the installation of a larger assessable handicapped restrooms and the addition of 22 restaurant seeds from 26-48.

The owners of Ristorante Rigoletto, 115-117 Salem Street canceled their appearance at NEWRA. They are requesting to expand the occupancy to include restaurant use.

The premises is presently permitted as a coffee, pastry and ice cream shop.

Marchelle Jacques-Yarde, Outreach Coordinator for Design and Construction of the Boston Parks Department provided information on the capital planning concerns of NEWRA regarding North End parks.

Yanni Tsipis, Senior Vice-President of Colliers International in Boston reported on the status of the Boston Public Market which will be going into the vacant ground floors in the Parcel 7 garage building.

The next NEWRA monthly meeting will be held on Thursday, May 8 at 7pm in the Nazzaro Community Center.
