A request by Billy Tse Restaurant to open a street sidewalk patio (20 seats) at 240 Commercial Street has one community group supporting the request and the other opposing it.
The North End/Waterfront Neighborhood Council by a vote of 5-3 voted not to oppose the restaurant change.
The North End/Waterfront Residents’ Association by a 18-19 vote opposed the request mainly due to the 12 midnight closure of the outdoor patio.
Both groups once again voted the opposite on a request by Chris Young to add a one-story addition at 78-80 Salem Street to be used by the first floor restaurant Trattoria Pulcinella. While the owner revamped his plans involving windows and use of the roof deck, the Association voted 10-27 in opposition.
Since both community groups are advisory boards their decisions are only recommendations to the city agencies that have the final say.
Both owners produced letter of support from abutters, however many residents opposed their plans.
There are 15 second floor restaurants in the North End: Tresca, Riccardo, Taranta, Bricco, Lucia, Fiore, Filippo, Saraceno, Marco, 5 North Square, Mama Maria, Goody Glovers, LoConte, LaFamiglia and Bacio.
