Lucia ‘Lucy’ Costello

Family formerly owned North End Shoe Factory

Lucia “Lucy” (Barbati) Costello, a lifelong resident of Chelsea, died on July 4 at the Glen Ridge Nursing Care Center in Medford after a brief illness. She was 94 years old.

Born and raised in Chelsea, she was a former member of the St. Rose Mother’s Club. In her early years, she worked at her family’s shoe factory in the North End of Boston and later at Forbes Lithograph.

The devoted wife of the late James H. Costello, she was the beloved mother of Kathleen DiPanfilo and her husband, Ronald of Everett and James Costello and his wife, Dorothy of Reading; cherished grandmother of Melissa Scoppettuolo and her husband, Antonio, Daniel, Kristine and Caroline Costello and great grandmother of Nicholas and Arianna Scoppettuolo.
