Corner Café North End Men’s Baseball Team Captures Championship

Corner Café the reigning North End Softball Champions could not capture its 19th crown this year, simply because Puopolo Park was not available due to major renovations, thus no league.

However, that did not stop Richie Longo from picking up another championship trophy, when his baseball team, Connor Café. The North End team brought home the bacon, capturing the 21 and older Bambuu Men’s Baseball League.

“I am used to receiving a North End Softball League championship trophy, not a men’s baseball one,” Longo told the Review.

“This team played hard all summer and fall and deserves credit for their outstanding effort, representing the Café and the North End.”

He noted that player coach Mike Martignetti did a terrific job managing the team.

Longo hosted a Chinese food dinner at the Café in celebration of the baseball championship team he sponsored.

He jokingly said, “I don’t have any more room in the Café for all these trophies.”

Madonna Della Cava Holds 68th Halloween Party

It was a terrific turn out as hundreds participated in the 68th annual Halloween Outdoor Party and parade sponsored by the Madonna Della Cava Society in the North End.

The parade featured children in costumes marching through the community streets with their parents and several Halloween characters beside and around them.

The Society presented each participant with tickets for many prizes.

The party held on Battery Street had games, activities, inflatable games, a bouncy, face painting and entertainment by DJ Amo.

Society members, working with the Mayor’s Office of Arts, Tourism and Special Events produced a solid community event that everyone enjoyed.

Commissioner Gross Guest Speaker at NEAD Dinner

Boston Police Commissioner William Gross will be the guest speaker at the upcoming North End Against Drugs (NEAD) Family Dinner/Family Talk community event at the Nazzaro Community Center, 30 North Bennet Street.

Scheduled for Monday, Nov. 18, at 6 p.m. (dinner) the doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and will feature an Italian feast with salad, bread-and-butter, macaroni and meatballs, dessert and soft drinks.

“The event is for North End families, Nazzaro Center members, NEAA participants and their families,” NEAD President John Romano said.

“All children must be accompanied by an adult. Grandparents are welcome to attend as long as they are with their grandchildren. Teenagers 15 and older can attend on their own,” Romano added.

Romano noted that there will be a collection of brand-new adult men and women hats and gloves at the dinner for Saint Francis House.

Winter Hat and Glove Drive

North End Friends of Saint Francis House have once again joined forces with Greenway Realty Group for their annual winter hat and glove collection for the homeless.

Already underway, the drive will run through December 2. No used items will be accepted.

All items can be dropped off at Greenway Realty Group, 169 Salem Street, North End.

“Over the years this collection has been a great success,” Friends member John Romano said. “Hopefully, we can say the same this year.”
