Hanover,Cross and Salem Streets Article 85 Demolition Delay Application Discussed

By Phil Orlandella

Only twelve North End residents turned out for a community meeting calling for Charter Realty and Development to discuss an Article 85 Demolition Delay application to demolish the buildings at 198 Hanover, 60 Cross and 53 Salem Streets across from the Greenway’s North End Park.

“The purpose of the meeting is to inform the community about the proposed demolition and to present alternatives to the demolition,” Karen Johnson of the development agency said in her opening remarks.

The development group appeared before the Boston Landmarks Commission on March 14 to produce documents required relating to possible historical issues, community meetings and other information relating to the project.

If approved by the commission, they will move forward with the city for construction permits, design review and tenant selection codes, if needed.

Additional community meetings with abutters will continue during the process and another community meeting will most likely be held.

It was clearly noted that there would be no hotel or marijuana shop on the property. In addition, there appears to be no historical problems to deal with. No tenants have been selected as yet. A construction timetable will not be available until all approvals are secured.
