Before the recent snow storm the gutter trash piled so high it is spilling back over onto the sidewalk. Calcutta you ask? NO, North Street!
The gutters in the North End are full of trash and other debris and it’s unsightly to say the least.
Local residents, business owners and elected member of the North End/Waterfront Neighborhood Council, Toni Gilardi has expressed her opinion claiming this is a direct result of… “Trash allowed on the streets overnight. Absentee landlords that are not training their tenants. Residents that do not take pride in the neighborhood. Trash collectors (paid with tax dollars) flinging open bags and not picking up the remains. DPW and ISD not working together to solve the issues and enforce compliance.”
Gilardi feels, “The results are devastating to the well-being of our wonderful neighborhood. We are one of the most popular destinations in the US, the residents put up with droves of tourist all year.”
She said, “Our financial contribution to this city is critical and beyond the revenue of any other contributing neighborhood. We deserve and at this point demand the highest support and attention from our city officials.”
Gilardi noted, “This is an emergency health and well-being situation that cannot be ignored any longer.”
Over 800 signatures of North End and Waterfront residents have been presented to Boston City Councilor Sal LaMattina that calls for the city to change their trash policies by not allowing trash to remain on neighborhood streets overnight.
Currently, household trash is placed out after 5pm the night before pickup days on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
If a new policy is enacted, household trash will be placed out after 6am on the day of.
A public hearing on this matter is being coordinated by Councilor LaMattina who on several occasions proposed this change at community meetings but was met with resistance.

Looks like they need to hire essentially a neighborhood janitor. Call people out when they litter too. You call someone out in front of others, trust me, they'll pick it up and put it in the trash can 6 paces down.
