Library renovation funding hits another roadblock

Another disappointing set back was delivered by the Boston Public Library (BPL) relating to obtaining rehabilitation funding for the North End Library.

The first setback was in 2013 when the library was identified by the BPL Branch Facilities Review Committee as one of six branches qualified fir future capital project funds.

Since then, 13 years ago, four libraries on the original list have been funded with the North End Library not advancing in the process and ironically, multiple other libraries not on the original list by passing the Parmenter Street facility.

At the Friends of the North End Library Board meeting in October, a representative, Priscilla Foley of the BPL told the group that there is $200 thousand dollars in renovation funds available for the library but BPL is not releasing the funds because of some construction time tables not available in the process.

This means the recently formed Friends of the North End Library (FONEL)Renovation Committee, chaired by Rory Harrington must make sure the funds requested for the library work will continue to be placed in the budget next year and each year thereafter if necessary.

FONEL has started a letter writing campaign to get support and advise the community of their dilemma.

“Built in 1965, the library is a vital community resource with a rich history,” Harrington said. “However, it no longer fully meets the evolving needs of our community.”

He added, “Our mission is to raise awareness and support for a comprehensive revitalization of the library, ensuring it remains a welcoming accessible and modern space for generations to come.”

He noted that Boston City Councilor Gabriel Colletta Zappata has secured the $200 thousand dollar renovation funds in the budget for possible use in the library.
