NEWNC Opposes the Hanover Street Proposal

A proposal by Federal Investments, Inc. to change the occupancy of 276-282 Hanover Street from 16 units and restaurant to 20 units and restaurant was opposed by the North End/Waterfront Neighborhood Council by a vote of 7-1.

The changes include renovations on floors 2 and 5 and a new sprinkler system. The units will be two-bedrooms and studio units. Inspection Service Department has approved the proposal.

In other matters, soon to be Nazzaro Community Center Director Stephen Siciliano presented his views on the status of the Center’s current programs and activities and what he felt about adding several programs that he would like to implement over the course of time, especially if the City creates a new facility in the community.

“The best interest for children and families,” was on his agenda.

The Council and those who attended the October 9 public meeting at the Center praised Siciliano for his determination and best interest for his ideas for the future.

Boston Neighborhood Service Department Liaison Maria Lanza discussed several projects and activities related to the community including the North Washington Street Bridge, Early Voting, the Nazzaro Center Study Committee, Cutillo Park, and increased affordable housing planned citywide.

Friends of Cutillo Park, located between Stillman and Salem Streets, told the Council that the park has long been neglected and has fallen into disrepair and it has the potential to become an important City open space.

They noted that there is a drug use problem and the sale of merchandise in the area as well.

They plan to attend the next North End Public Safety meeting with Boston Police to advise them of these two problems.

The Friends asked for residents to join the community organization, or present ideas on what should be implemented in the park for the betterment of its use.

Joey and Kristina Taglient advised the Council of the opening of Row Republic at 77 North Street is coming January or February.
