A $177 million construction contract to replace the North Washington Street Bridge between the North End and Charlestown has been approved by MassDOT.
Work related activities including utility work are currently expected to begin this spring and construction operations will start in the fall of 2018 when traffic logistics like lane reductions will be implemented in order to allow crews to safely and effectively work on the bridge structure. Construction is expected to be completed by the fall of 2023.
Once started, motorist will have access to two travel lanes in the inbound direction towards Boston and one outbound leading to Charlestown. Pedestrians and cyclists access will be maintained. For one month in 2019, when the main truss span is demolished there will be one lane in each direction.
MassDOT plans to conduct two public meetings this April in the North End and Charlestown.
