NEWNC Community Election Set for May 20

The North End/Waterfront Neighborhood Council (NEWNC) President John Pregmon has announced that the 2017 annual community election of members will be held in the Nazzaro Community Center, 30 North Bennet Street on Saturday, May 20 from 10 AM to 2 PM.

Candidates must be at least 18 years old and a resident of the North End voting precincts 1, 2, 3, 4 of Ward 3.

Candidates must secure a nomination paper at the Nazzaro Center, secure 40 valid signatures from community residents, and return them to the Center by Monday, May 1. Six seats are open for election.

A candidates’ night will be held on Monday, May 8 at NEWNC’s monthly meeting at 7 PM.

Once the polls close, the general public can witness the counting of the ballots with the results made public immediately. In case of a tie, the ballots will be recounted until a winner is determined.

Residents need to be at least 18 years old to vote but they do not have to be registered voters. Adequate proof of residency must be produced or at least one form of identification with a photograph, address within the community and date of birth.

Election officers at the polling location will make the final decision of the proof of residency.

Residents can vote for up to six candidates. The top six candidates will be elected to two-year terms, joining the other six members of the Council with one-year remaining on their term.

Remaining Council members are: Michael Bonetti, Danielle D’Ambrosio, John Pregmon, Gennaro Riccio, Brett Roman and Marie Simboli.

Candidates will be allowed to solicit voters on the outside of the polling place.

NEWNC is comprised of twelve (12) elected North End/Waterfront residents who serve as an advisory board to the City of Boston in municipal affairs. NEWNC was created in 1984 by the City of Boston Mayor’s Office in an effort to increase communication between the neighborhood and City departments and agencies.

NEWNC advises the City of Boston on issues affecting the quality of life in the North End/Waterfront area including, but not limited to, land-use, development, clean streets, resident parking, public safety, residential and commercial expansion, and food and beverage licensing.

NEWNC meets on the second Monday of each month, (excluding August) at 7 PM. Meetings are open to the general public.
