Public Safety Meeting/Self Defense Class Held at the Nazzaro Center

Boston Police were out in force for the monthly Public Safety meeting and a Self Defense class held simultaneously at the Nazzaro Community Center last week.

The usual monthly meeting was held on the first floor while the self-defense class, sponsored by Boston City Councilor Sal LaMattina was held in the third floor gym with close to 50 residents attending.  Boston Police Sergeant Gary Eblan conducted the class.

Wallace Grant Tilford of the Boston Police Department Neighborhood Watch Unit attended both the self-defense class and public safety meeting and handed out whistles to all attendees to be used in case of an emergency. He also handed out information on safety tips to help avoid cell phone robberies.

At the Public Safety meeting, crime statistics from the last 30 days were presented by District Commanding Officer Captain James Hasson.

Those statistics reflected one indecent assault and battery, three robberies, one residential robbery and four larceny of motor vehicles.

Captain Hasson also noted that for a small area (North End) there is a lot of police coverage.

Lieutenant Detective Charles Wilson, born and raised in the North End, told residents that the recent alleged sexual assault is still under investigation by the Boston Police Sexual Assault Unit and he had no update.

He also advised that when the incident occurred, he and Captain Hasson dispatched numerous detectives and police patrols in the community and began an immediate informational process.

Captain Hasson told residents that there is a walking police present each night from 11:45pm 7:30am, two additional patrol cars on weekends and an additional Suffolk University paid details on weekends.

During the upcoming Saint Patrick’s Day events additional police will be in the North Station, Faneuil Hall and North End areas.

Due to a scheduling conflict at the Nazzaro Community Center, there will be no April public safety meeting. The next monthly meeting will be held on Thursday, April 1 at 6:30pm in the Nazzaro Center.
