Callahan Tunnel Closure Set December 31

MassDOT is preparing for the closure of the Callahan Tunnel for the full rehabilitation of its deck down to the steel supports (floor beams) and the pouring of a new deck.

Other repairs that will take place will include the interconnected curb, which includes air exchange vents and the replacement of all the wall panels.

The Callahan Tunnel is 52 years old and is in need of rehabilitation according to MassDOT which plans to begin the project on Tuesday, December 31 for two and a half months until March 12, 2014, using three phases of construction.

From March 13 to late August, the tunnel will be reopened and no work will take place during the day, but the tunnel will be closed from 11pm to 5am to allow the contractor to replace the wall panels.

From August to mid-November, finished work will be performed during off-peak hours.

MassDOT is postponing the closure of the MBTA Government Center Station until the tunnel project is complete.

Project engineers carefully developed detour routes with input from stakeholders. Printable detour route maps are available on the project website: www.mass.gov/massdot/CallahanTunnelRehab.

Where needed, MassDOT is improving signal timing to facilitate the flow of traffic along detour routes during construction.
