Community Group Seeks Final Plans for Hanover Street Development

Former VFW Post #144 site on Hanover Street has been demolished for the development of twenty-five rental apartments with parking.

Reportedly, the Boston Redevelopment Authority (BRA) lead architect, is reviewing the plans for a new six-story, 55-foot building proposal at 244-246R Hanover Street, formerly the site of the VFW Post #144, located between Ristorante Fiore and Spagnuolo Restaurant.

Apparently, the developer has met with the BRA and the architect to modify the plans.

The first floor of the building will be the entrance to a 25 car basement garage under the former North End Union, 20 Parmenter Street.

Back in April, the North End/Waterfront Residents’ Association (NEWRA) voted to oppose an appeal to increase the number of residential units in the Union building and in the proposed building on Hanover Street, in part by converting formerly approved commercial space into residential space.

NEWRA also raised concerns that the architectural design of the new building did not confirm to the architectural context of Hanover Street and would set an unwelcome and unsightly precedent.

NEWRA Zoning, Licensing and Construction Committee will request that the developer present final plans to the community prior to construction, according to committee co-chair David Kubiak.
