Statistics Show NE Crime Down 16%

District A-1 Boston Police started off on the right foot this year as crime in the North End is reportedly down sixteen percent during the month of January 2013, compared to January 2012 according to Commanding Officer Captain Thomas Lee.

The Captain told about 25 or so residents that attended the Boston Police monthly Public Safety meeting, crime in the neighborhood was down in every category. He also stated that crime in the North End during 2012 was down ten percent from the previous year.

Boston City Councilor Sal LaMattina praised the Captain and his command for doing a terrific job of keeping the crime rate down in the North End which is a part of his district.

The main suggestion from residents was to attempt to have the business community help pay for police details and/or overtime in the neighborhood, especially during the weekends.

Captain Lee advised that this would be a volunteer commitment not a mandatory thing to do. The example he gave was the fact that Bova’s Bakery has been voluntarily paying for the detail in the area for years but the business is not required to hire a detail.

During the month of January, police have only received six loud party calls. So far this February there have been four calls, according to Sergeant Tom Lema.

During the same time period seven motor vehicles have been towed, 96 moving violations have been issued and 375 parking citations have been written.

There were no homicides, sexual assaults, robberies, community disorder or graffiti committed.

Reported crimes included 1 aggravated assault, 2 breaking and entering, 1 auto theft and 1 larceny from a motor vehicle.

The next monthly Public Safety meeting will be held on Thursday, March 7 at 6:30pm at the Nazzaro Community Center.
