Rep. Michlewitz Appointed to Remain as Chair the Joint Committee on Public Service

North End State Representative Aaron Michlewitz has again been appointed to chair the Joint Committee on Public Service. House Speaker Robert DeLeo made the appointment last week.

Michlewitz, 34, a lifelong North Ender and rising star in the House was first appointed to the post by DeLeo in 2011.

The committee that Michlewitz chairs considers all matters concerning the salaries, civil service and retirement of public employees. This includes the retirement of judges, court personnel and county employees but excluding the salaries of judges, court personnel and county employees. Michlewitz and the committee also oversee collective bargaining for state employees and other public employees.

“I am very honored that Speaker DeLeo would instill such great faith and responsibility by appointing me as Chair of the Public Service Committee,” said Michlewitz.

In November 2012, The Boston Phoenix named Michlewitz to their “Beacon Hill’s Most Beautiful: 25 power players who keep the Golden Dome in style” list.

Michlewitz was one of 25 individuals, according to the Phoenix, “who brighten the State House halls with style, attitude, and even — if such a thing exists on Beacon Hill — inner beauty.”

Michlewitz was first elected in 2009 during a special election for former Speaker of the House Sal DiMasi’s seat. Michlewitz won with 50.9 percent of the vote during the Democratic primary and beat out Susan Passoni. He went on to beat non-party candidate John Keith on June 16, 2009 with 79.78 percent of the vote.

Michlewitz was born and raised in the North End of Boston and has lived and worked in the neighborhoods he represents his whole life.

A graduate of Northeastern University, Michlewitz has dedicated himself to helping others. He has become a popular mentor to many of his neighborhood’s youth for whom he has been a fixture throughout organized sports programs. He coaches both youth baseball and basketball with his lifelong friends whom he used to play alongside with when he was a participant of these programs.

As a permanent member of the St. Anthony’s Society, an organization devoted to worthwhile fundraising for many causes in Boston’s North End community, Michlewitz is part of a new generation of Bostonians who remain dedicated to preserving one of Boston’s oldest and long standing cultural traditions.

Michlewitz is also a member of The Boston Groundwater Trust and is someone who served his community as President of the North End Waterfront Neighborhood Council (NEWNC).

In his short time in the House, Michlewitz has been able to successfully work on two important quality of life issues that have become serious concerns to his constituents. One is the growing trash problem in the North End and the other neighborhoods he represents. To combat this issue, Michlewitz was able to help pass the Green Ticket bill that gives cities and towns the ability to go after trash violators more aggressively.
