Yearly Crime Numbers Down in North End

Crime statistics in the North End over the past year (Dec. 2011 to Dec. 2012) have dropped ten percent according to District A-1 Boston Police Commanding Officer Thomas Lee.

The Captain made the announcement at last week’s Public Safety monthly meeting held in the Nazzaro Community Center to about thirty or so residents in attendance. The ten percent decrease is reportedly the lowest drop in any neighborhood in Boston.

Residents appeared to be pleased with the lower numbers for the year and with the statistics over the last thirty days were also lower.

During that time frame three larcenies occurred at North Square, Prince/Hanover Streets and Atlantic Avenue. Four cars were stolen and only one vehicle break-in occurred. Two disorderly arrests were made, one at a loud party.

Crime category statistics presented by Captain Lee for the past thirty days were: homicides 0, sexual assaults 0, robberies 0, breaking and entering 0, auto thefts 5, larcenies 3, larceny from a motor vehicle 1, graffiti 0, community disorder 0, towed vehicles 9, moving violations 56 and parking citations 250.

It was also noted that Sergeant Tom Lema representing District A-1 supported the nuisance ordinance at the City Council meeting.

Councilor Sal LaMattina’s bill was passed.

Reportedly, Boston Mayor Thomas Menino has instructed all district commanders to crackdown on quality of life issues in neighborhoods.

The next Public Safety meeting will be held on Thursday, February 7 at 6:30pm at the Nazzaro Community Center.
