Forty-four students were the recipients of the 2019-2020 North End Against Drugs (NEAD) Raymond and Michelina Costa Scholarship awards program.

Since its inception over ten years ago, this is the first time that students not selected will receive a $50 scholarship and a $100 gift certificate to purchase school supplies.

Students received scholarships totaling $8,000 in awards.

Nine $500 scholarships were granted to students attending tuition-based schools and thirty-one public school students received $100 gift cards to help with supplies for the upcoming year.

“Many donors made this year the biggest and the best scholarship program,” NEAD President John Romano said. “NEAD is already starting to get ready for next year’s drive.”

“Pizzeria Regina provided all of the pizza for dinner and the BCYF Nazzaro Center allowed us to use the Center’s Hall for the special occasion,” Romano added.

Nazzaro Center recognized for donation drive

Being part of the inaugural Boston Collect and Sort team effort to collect items in conjunction with the Boston Center Youth Families (BCYF) and Youth Center Drive to assist low income children and homeless people, the North End Nazzaro Community Center held a successful donation drive for the Cradles to Crayons project.

The Center’s effort helped create customize Kid Packs to help address the hidden crisis of clothing needs that currently exist in many neighborhoods throughout the City.

BCYF and Cradles for Crayons recognize the Center for the support that helped make the incredible city-why drive possible that made a difference in the lives of kids and homelessness throughout the city and state.

The drive developed 1,181 Kid Packs delivered to needy people.

Combat Zone talk at Library

Friends of the North End Library recently hosted an author talk on “The Combat Zone” presented by Stephanie Schorow.

In her presentation, the veteran reporter said, “Boston has always been known for its stiff character rooted in its Puritan past. So how did this great New England city become home to one of the largest and most notorious adult entertainment districts in the nation?”

In this expertly crafted history, veteran reporter Schorow teases out the issues that created this controversial neighborhood, giving voice to the players who sought to tame or profit from sleaze snaking its way through Boston.
