Rep. Michlewitz Addresses NEWRA

State Rep. Aaron Michlewitz (North End) received an ovation from the many residents at the North End/Waterfront Residents’ Association (NEWRA) monthly meeting when it was announced that House Speaker Robert DiLeo has appointed him as Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee.

Rep. Aaron Michlewitz downplay the appointment saying, “My number one priority will always be my constituents.” He added, “My district is the most important thing to me.”

One of two NEWRA guest speakers, Michelwitz advised residents of his legislative proposals he has filed for 2019-2020 legislative session.

Some of the many bills he sponsored include: Reprecincting for equal voting access to voting polls.

After every census cities and towns are required to access boundaries of wards and precincts.           

He noted that, “Boston has been exempted from this since 1921 and this bill would end that exemption.”

Another proposed bill would increase traffic fines of vehicles that block intersections or impede access to crosswalks.

Granting residents of Commercial Wharf protection from being evicted with legislation that would codify status quo at Commercial Wharf was filed.

Domestic abuse/gun legislation that allows police to search premises for weapons when they are called to the scene of a domestic violence disturbance and seize them if weapons would threaten the safety of the victim.

The Representative also co-sponsored many other bills, including a climate resiliency planning which establishes a commission to determine the best ways the Legislature can enact major coastal and in land climate resiliency projects.

A wage theft bill that would ensure workers have greater protections from employers who wish to withhold salaries or other benefits.

In totality Representative Michelwitz has filed 25 bills and co-sponsored 7 others.

District 1 Boston City Counselor Lydia Edwards spoke on North End trash conditions that need to be fixed. An increase in fines, more enforcement, more communication and obtaining additional city services.

She highlights the importance of establishing a non-profit North End Street Cleaning Committee, a residential group that can help lessen the problem and working closely with City Hall to drastically improve the filthy condition that exist in the most historic neighborhood in the City, maybe the country.

The proposed committee is well on its way to be formed but there is still a lot to do according to supporters who hope the business community will get involved in a big way.

NEWRA will be sending the City a letter relating to the development of the Dock Square Garage into luxury apartments. The letter will express height and view issues.

No vote was taken on a proposal to place a Chase Bank at the corner of Cross and Salem Streets because the request did not go before NEWRA’s Zoning, Licensing and Construction Committee for review.

            The next NEWRA monthly meeting will be held on Thursday, March 14, at 7 p.m. at the Nazzaro Community Center.
