NEWNC Supports K of C Plans for Housing

Three potential legal occupancy changes and the conversion of a building into affordable elderly apartments were supported by the North End/Waterfront Neighborhood Council (NEWNC) at the June 11 monthly meeting.

One agenda item was withdrawn and the Council did not vote on another item because abutters had problems with it and the request will be resubmitted.

The Council supported the Knights of Columbus proposal to convert its headquarters at 41 North Street into 23 affordable elderly apartments and a new Council Headquarters. The vote was 9-1.

Council approval was given to change the legal occupancy at 27 Sheafe Street from five units to eight units. The vote was 9-1.

Withdrawn was a request to change the legal occupancy at 97 Salem Street from a real estate office to one retail space and nine residential units and a five-story addition above the one-story building.

No vote was taken on a request to change the legal occupancy at 20 Moon Street due to objections from abutters. Plans will be presented again at a future NEWNC meeting.

In addition, NEWNC President John Pregmon, introduced the newly elected Council members: Marie Simboli, Brett Roman and Patrick Bova. Pregmon was elected as well.

Boston Inspectional Service Department (ISD) Commissioner William Christopher updated NEWNC in other residents of the existing procedures of ISD.
