NEWNC Supports Three North End Proposals

By Phil Orlandella

Three voting items were on the agenda of the North End/Waterfront Neighborhood Council (NEWNC) monthly meeting held November 13 at the Nazzaro Community Center.

In addition, Alex Goldfeld of the North End Historical Society presented facts about the local organization and its activities.

A request by owner of 3 Pond Place, Stavros Tsakalidis to renovate the interior of existing house and to add a two-story addition to the structure was supported by the Council.

The Council supported a request by the Juicery, which seeks to relocate to 58 Salem Street. The request to move to a new location is condition and requires approval from the ISD Board of Appeals.

Dr. Simcha, manager of 180 Endicott Street has appealed the refusal issued by the Inspectional Services Department for his application to change the occupancy from three apartments to four apartments. No additional floor area ratio or increasing of bedrooms.

The building has not been renovated and needs updating of all systems. The separation of the third and fourth floors requires installation of a bathroom on the third floor. The Council supported the proposal.

Maria Lanza, Liaison for the City of Boston Neighborhood Services Department told the Council that the Public Facilities Department is currently researching ways to have a new community center and what they may look like, whether it will be replacing the building (Nazzaro Center) or it could be located at another site.

She encouraged residents to get the message out, because the PFD wants as much information as possible for the development and use of a new community center.

NEAD President John Pregmon agreed that everyone should have “input for a new community center and he is looking forward to expanding”.

Residents felt that the Center has outgrown itself and if the city has the funding, they should build a new center for neighborhood use.

In addition to the agenda the Council discussed an issue at Joe’s American Bar and Grill, 100 Atlantic Avenue.

Pregmon said the Council has been reaching out to the eatery, but has received no response.

He said, “NEWNC will continue to reach out to resolve this issue.”

NEWNC’s next monthly meeting will be held on Monday, December 14 at 7 p.m. in the Nazzaro Community Center.
