Chilly weather didn’t keep a huge crowd from attending Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh’s 2017 North End Coffee Hour held at Christopher Columbus Park on May 31.
Several city officials from Transportation, Public Works and Boston Police were available to answer questions along with the Mayor.
Mayor Walsh addressed the growing number of concerns relating to the amount of construction in the neighborhood. He reminded residents that a North End Construction update meeting will be held on Thursday, June 15 at 6 PM in the Nazzaro Community Center, 30 North Bennet Street to further discuss the issue.
The Mayor also addressed some of the many investments in North End projects placed in the city’s capital budget.
These improvements include: A $2 million upgrade to Paul Revere Mall (Prado). A $2.5 million redesign of North Square including art. An investment of $100,000 to examine and determine an optional spot for a new community center. An investment of $23 million in the old North Bennet Street School to relocate the Eliot School and a $40 million investment for the expansion of the Eliot School at 585 Commercial Street.
Boston City Counselors Sal Lamattina and Annissa Essaili George attended the coffee hour. Lamattina thanked North End/Waterfront residents for their support over the years.
Eliot School students sang a good morning song as the sizable crowd arrived for the annual events.
Residents enjoy coffee and food provided by Dunkin’ Donuts. The Parks Department gave out potted plants and a raffle for Dunkin’ Donuts gift certificate was also held.
The Mayor also spoke with members from the Save The Harbor group on housing related issues.
