By Phil Orlandella

By a vote of 30-4 the North End/Waterfront Neighbor-hood Residents’ Association (NEWRA) supported a request to change the occupancy at 89 Salem Street, (the old True Value Hardware Store) to include a fitness center (KO North End).

The fitness center will focus on boxing skills and exercise and will be open seven days a week. Water and similar light refreshments and apparel will be offered.

State Senator Joe Boncore presented and updated on pending legislation on Beacon Hill. Some of the measures he related to residents included: criminal justice, transportation, marijuana and other bills.

Boston District One candidate Lydia Edwards (East Boston) provided the group with her platform on how she will serve the North End community if elected. Edwards said she will respond and support the community on issues of concern in a timely manner.

Design Concepts for the North Square public art project were presented by A+J Design.

Four design pieces relating to the North End and North Square themes were shown.

Following three public meeting, it appears residents liked the concept.

The next NEWRA monthly meeting will be held on Thursday, June 8 at 7pm in the Nazzaro Community Center.
