North End 2018 Capital Budget on the Books

By Phil Orlandella

Many North End community projects are included in the City of Boston 2018 Capital Budget.

Projects scheduled to take place involve Eliot School construction, Paul Revere Mall (Prado) improvements, North Square redesign of several streets, construction of a new community center and investments at Christopher Columbus Park.

A major investment of $260,000 will be used for Christopher Columbus. (Details not available)

Over the next two years, the Eliot School construction projects will be completed. Then a new $23 million North Bennet Street building will welcome fifth to eighth graders this fall into a 21st-century learning environment, while this summer, the final phase of construction will begin at the Commercial Street building. The $24.6 million multi-year 585 Commercial Street project will provide additional classrooms to support the Eliot School’s expansion as a K-8 School.

A $1.9 million investment in the Paul Revere Mall will ensure this historic park is a welcoming and inviting place for residents and visitors. The project includes site furnishings, pathways, landscaping and utilities, restoration work on the fountain and monuments.

A $2.5 million investment in North Square for a redesign of the key junctions of North Street, Sun Court, Moon Street, Garden Court and Prince Street including the installation of public art, with $1.4 million allocated for FY18 for construction.

A $100,000 investment in FY18 for the North End Community Center to develop a building program and assess siting options for the design and construction of a new community center.
