Boston Officials to Allow Self-Driving Vehicles

The City of Boston, in partnership with nuTonomy, will begin testing autonomous or self-driving cars in the Seaport District by the end of 2016. Governor Charlie Baker and Mayor Martin Walsh simultaneously approved the testing through executive orders.

Once testing begins, the city’s Boston Transportation and the Mayor’s Office of New Urban Mechanics will carefully monitor the effects of autonomous vehicles and identify how these vehicles will further the safety, access and sustainability goals of Boston’s transportation plan, Go Boston 2030 through this first partnership.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) has been signed by all three parties.

“Boston is ready to lead the charge on self-driving vehicles and as Mayor of Boston, I am committed to ensuring autonomous vehicles will benefit Boston residents,” said Mayor Walsh in a press release.
