Bill Signed That Could Lower Speed Limit in City

Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh’s Vision Zero goal that he believes will bring the number of traffic deaths and serious injuries to zero by 2030 received a much-needed shot in the arm when Governor Charlie Baker signed H.4565 that will give municipalities the authority to lower default speed limits.

The bill is An Act modernizing municipal finance that the Mayor looks forward to working with the Boston City Council, once the law goes into effect, to lower the default speed limit in Boston from 30 to 25 miles per hour.

“We know that lower speed limits are an important tool in reducing fatal and serious crashes and creating safer streets for people of all ages who are walking, driving and bicycling,” said the Mayor in a press release.

A lower speed limit in Boston would be a major early accomplishment for Vision Zero.

            City Councilor Sal LaMattina has also expressed his full support for lowering the speed limit in the city.
