NEWNC Defers Hotel Request Unanimously

By Phil Orlandella

Confusion reigned at the last North End/Waterfront Neighborhood Council (NEWNC) monthly meeting held in the Nazzaro Community Center.

The only voting item on the agenda was a request by Westmont Hospitality, that have reportedly purchased or are about to purchase the Battery Wharf Hotel for the transfer of a full liquor license and a certificate of occupancy change to list live music.

Despite a representative from Westmont stating that they will make all the concessions raised by the many abutters in attendance at the public meeting, the Council deferred the request until additional information relating to the new hotel can be presented to the Council.

Council members were not satisfied with the presentation made that claimed there would be no changes to the operation of the hotel and the concessions noted, until they were put in writing on every document needed by the city before the hotel’s request was made.

They also requested that the applicant’s lawyer be present when they once again appeared before the Counsel.

This month’s Community Chat involved representatives of the Four North End Societies that still provide feasts on the streets. There were once twelve societies conducting feasts, that number has decreased to four: Saint Anthony, Madonna Della Cava, Saint Agrippina and the Fisherman’s feasts.

The Council doesn’t meet in August. The next monthly meeting will be held on Monday, September 12 at 7pm in the Nazzaro Community Center.
