North End Resident Stephen Borelli Announces for Governor’s Council

Former Police Sergeant Stephen Borelli a life-long resident of the North End announced his candidacy for Governor’s Council for the 6th District. With over 30 years of experience as a special investigator, law enforcement officer and an Assistant Clerk Magistrate, Attorney Borelli brings an enthusiastic, community-centered voice to this year’s Democratic primary.

“The centerpiece of my campaign is to demand action on the most pressing issues that are facing our community – opioid addiction, protecting our seniors from physical, mental and financial abuse, and creating a court system that is fully invested in our neighborhoods, not just punishing criminals,” said Borelli.

Attorney Borelli is running in the September 8th primary and is adding an exciting element to a 2016 presidential election year already full of dynamic and competitive local races in Massachusetts.

“Residents want their elected officials held to the highest standards, and this year I’m asking for them to be the judge of who can best represent their interests,” said Borelli, whose campaign slogan is You Be The Judge. “The Governor’s Council can no longer ignore the opioid addiction crisis or the predatory practices that are crippling the finances of our senior citizens. Residents are demanding that their representatives take the lead on these critical issues and move beyond business as usual.”

 Borelli will be campaigning full-time to earn a seat on the Governor’s Council and has already visited all 20 communities in the district to talk about his priorities.

“This is a grassroots campaign, pure and simple,” according to Borelli. “My only job for the next five months is to focus on the issues that many of us are struggling with. I believe that my 30 years of experience can help restore and modernize our judicial system to meet the high expectations set by our communities. On September 8th, voters from Chinatown to Marblehead will support the strongest and most qualified Democrat to represent them, and I hope they will judge me to be worthy of their trust.”

Stephen started his career as a special investigator charged with tracking down fraud and abuse of public funds in the Massachusetts Bureau of Special Investigations. He then served as a Sergeant in the MBTA Police and led the training of his fellow officers in criminal investigations during a distinguished 13-year career.

“During my days as a Police Sergeant, I frequently encountered people at the most distraught and fragile moments in their lives,” said Borelli. “I still remember each of them and I’m honored to say that I keep in touch with many of them to this day.”

Many years after he left the police force, Stephen was instrumental in helping to solve a sexual assault case that he initially responded to in the 1980’s. Thanks to his persistence and the exceptional training of his fellow officers, this case showed Mr. Borelli how the dedication of just a small group of public servants can change the lives of those in need.

 Borelli received his law degree in 1997 from the New England School of Law and then entered private practice representing clients in all phases of criminal and civil litigation. In 2006, he was appointed as an Assistant Clerk Magistrate in Somerville District Court where he continues to serve the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Attorney Borelli holds a B.A. from Suffolk University and is a proud resident of Boston’s North End.
