Quest to Save North End Trees Underway

North End/Waterfront Residents’ Association (NEWRA) President Ford Cavallari has asked the membership to take some sort of action and discuss possible measures they could undertake with the city to try and safeguard the neighborhood trees from being cut down by contractors, which he personally witnessed.

Cavallari has been working with the Boston Redevelopment Authority (BRA) on how the neighborhood can protect its greenery from developers taking them down.

He told members at the last NEWRA public meeting, “It’s important for us to reset on the future, if we can figure out how to protect the trees in the North End.”

Apparently, the BRA asked Cavallari if NEWRA had undertaken a tree survey to inventory and catalog trees in the area, he said not to his knowledge they haven’t.

However, he and residents ha

ve discussed possible ways of organizing the tree inventory in the North End and will be looking to implement one on of them in the coming months.

Cavallari suggested recruiting local schools to take a survey as a science project to identify trees (not their species) or enlisting kelp from environmental groups.

He noted that this didn’t materialize, it would probably come down to an organized effort from residents in the form of street teams going through a selected portion of the neighborhood to identify and count the trees in the area.

Cavallari asked residents to say something if they see someone cutting down a tree and noted the Boston Conservative can levy a fine against the offender.
