Broader Nomination Papers an Equitable Electoral Process

A special act being filed by Mayor Martin J. Walsh that will modify the city’s nomination paper process for municipal elections allowing more candidates to meet the threshold required to seek elected office is nothing short of a good idea.

This change would allow voters broader choices when they enter the voting booth and could attract more of them to get out and vote.

Currently voters in the city are only allowed to sign one nomination paper for Mayor and district city council. At Large nomination papers can be signed by registered voters.

 The Mayor’s special act will create a more equitable process by allowing voters to sign nomination papers for as many candidates as they choose.

 This makes sense and should be adopted by the City Council.
