Fitchburg St University was in a battle with Bridgewater St University for the 4 seed in the upcoming playoffs and North Ender stalwart Mike Martignetti was right in the middle of it. Bridgewater raced out to a 8-0 lead but Fitchburg battled back and found themselves trailing 8-6 in the last inning. North End Dodger center fielder Bob Mello led off with a walk. After a ground out the Bridgewater pitcher issued another walk bringing Martignetti to the plate with 2 on and 1 out. Martignetti got a hold of the first pitch fastball and deposited it deep over the fence in left-center field giving Fitchburg a wild walk-off 9-8 victory. Martignetti was particularly thrilled since he transferred from Bridgewater to play at Fitchburg during his freshman year. Said Martignetti, “After the walk I knew he would try to get ahead with a fastball. I just told myself to be ready and not miss it.†And Mike didn’t miss it causing a fevered celebration in Fitchburg. Mike is a product of NEAA baseball and has gone through the program from age 9 onward. He currently plays 1st base for the 21u Dodgers and gives them a power presence in the 3 hole.
