Mayor Names William Evans Boston Police Commissioner

Boston has a new Police Commissioner William B. Evans, who has been a member of the force for over 31 years.

The new commissioner was appointed by newly elected Mayor Martin J. Walsh at ceremonies held on January 9.

Evans said, “I am deeply honored and humbled that the Mayor has entrusted me with its leadership.”

Evans has seen firsthand how the Boston Police Department has evolved into a well-trained, well-resourced and professional organization committed to serving and protecting residents, visitors, businesses and institutions.

“We (police) are constantly striving to build, strengthen and improve our relationships with the community.”

In District A-1, police conduct a monthly North End Public Safety monthly meeting the first Thursday of every month at the Nazzaro Community Center, starting at 6:30 P.M.

At these meetings, residents are provided with Part 1 crime statistics from the prior 30 days.

Residents also have the opportunity to ask questions and make suggestions pertaining to crime related issues in the neighborhood.

These meetings are well attended and have become a useful forum for both police and residents.

District A-1 Boston Police Commanding Officer Captain James Hassan, Sergeant Tom Lema and Officer Ted Boyle attend the public safety meeting on a regular basis.

“We (police) hav formed lasting partnerships and strengthened relationships with the community,” Evans said.

“Tremendous work has been done but there is still much to do to make all of our neighborhood safer,” he said.
