Greenway Hosts 9/11 Remembrance

NEWNC President Donna Freni, a member of the Greenway Leadership Council, recently updated residents on several topics related to the area located along Boston’s Waterfront.

“The Greenway sustained very little damage from hurricane Irene,” she said.

“Out of more than six hundred trees, the Greenway lost only four, three next to 125 Summer Street and one across from 200 State Street,” Freni said.

She noted that the last day for the Greenway Open Market was September 17.

The Chinatown Park furniture ribbon cutting will be held on Friday, September 30 from 12 noon to 1pm to celebrate the collaborative effort to bring new tables, chairs and umbrellas to Chinatown Park and to thank the donors, according to Freni.

She also reported that the Boston Public Market on Dewey Square will remain open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11am to 6:30pm through November.

A 9/11 Service Project was held on the Greenway in the Wharf District Parks to honor victims of 9/11 with service work in Boston, according to Freni.

“Recognizing 9/11 as a National Day of Service, the Rose Kennedy Greenway hosted a care package event,” Freni said.

“Volunteers (500) helped the Military Heroes Fund assemble 1,000 military care packages which will be shipped to military personnel from Massachusetts stationed around the globe,” she said.

“In addition to the care packages, volunteers wrote letters of support and participated in a pledge drive for the families supported by the Massachusetts Military Heroes Fund,” Freni added./

Speakers at the event included Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano, Governor Deval Patrick, Attorney General Martha Coakley, Mayor Thomas Menino and the late Senator Ted Kennedy’s wife Vicki Kennedy.

“It was a touching remembrance and a powerful tribute to the victims of 9/11,” Freni concluded.
