W. Davis Lackey, Jr.

His Passion was Politics and Communication

W. Davis Lackey Jr., died on February 15 at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. He was 46 years old.

Born March 26, 1964 in New Rochelle, NY, he moved to Cumberland Foreside, ME, at age 13. He was educated at the Rippowam Cisqua School (Bedford, NY), Phillips Academy Andover, and Yale University. In Junior High School, he volunteered in the local Ford-Dole presidential campaign office, and at Andover he served as an intern for Congressman David Emery of Maine. At Yale, he was elected managing editor of the Yale Daily News and after college worked for Governor John R. McKernan, Jr., first as “rookie of the year” on the campaign staff, and later as Speechwriter and Director of Communications.

His skill as a writer next led him to be appointed Director of Communications and Maine Issues for Senator Olympia J. Snowe, after which he was recruited by Fidelity Investments in Boston, where he served as Vice President of Public Policy. In January, 2011, he began work as a deputy secretary of state to Charles Summers, Maine Secretary of State.

He is survived by his father, William D. Lackey Sr. and his wife Ann of Pittsboro, NC; his mother Jean M. Hubbell and her husband, William, of Cumberland Foreside, ME; his brother, Timothy C. Lackey, and his wife, Heidi, of Whitefield, ME; his sister Amanda L. Cote and her husband, Ryan, and their daughter Eliza of North Yarmouth, ME, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

A memorial service in celebration of his life was held at First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church, Portland, Maine. Maria ‘Marie’ Giuliana

Of Hanover, formerly of the North End

Maria “Marie” (Pasquale) Giuliana of Hanover, formerly of the North End, Dorchester and Quincy, died on March 10.

A retired employee of David Brett, she was the beloved wife of the late Michael; devoted mother of Karen M. Hayhurst of Hanover and her late husband, William W. Jr., and the late Michael J. Giuliana; loving grandmother of Michael J., William W. III and his wife, Jamie, and Marc R. Hayhurst; great grandmother of Emma J. and William IV; sister of the late Eva Messana, Anthony J., and Salvatore Pasquale.
