Salvatore ‘Fernando’ Cardone

North End resident

Salvatore “Fernando” Cardone of Boston’s North End, died on Monday, January 3. He was 78 years old.

The cherished son of the late Angelina (Gabuzza) and Mario Cardone, he was the loving brother of Rose Rossi, Irene Pasto, and Paul, Victor, and Sebastian “Sibby” Cardone and is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

Funeral arrangements were by the Boston Harborside Home-J.S. Waterman & Sons – Waring-Langone. Burial was at Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to St. Johns School, 9 Moon Street, Boston, MA 02113. www.bostonharborsidehome.com

Anthony Greco

Entrepreneur, Candy Maker, Hotelier and Philanthropist

Anthony Greco, entrepreneur, candy maker, hotelier, philanthropist, died on January 3. He was 89 years old.

Born in East Boston, in 1922, the oldest of five children of Cosmo and Rosa (Bonsinalli) Greco, the family traveled back to Italy after a short stay in the United States and, as a teenager, he enlisted in the Italian Navy at the outbreak of World War II. The Navy Destroyer he served on saw more than its share of action and Mr. Greco was injured in the line of duty. He served with honor until his ship was captured by allied forces and he spent the rest of the war in a detention facility in North Africa.

The family made its way back to the United States after the war where he met and married, Maria, his wife of 60 years. They lived in the sanctuary of Boston’s North End for all their lives.

Mr. Greco was employed by the world famous Schraffts Chocolates where over many decades he served as “Master Candy Maker.” In the early 1960’s he developed and produced his own line of gourmet candies, securing a partnership with both Jordan Marsh and The Stop & Shop Co.

Anthony Greco was a lover of great music, with a dedication to “the standards” and Neapolitan love songs. Being blessed with a great voice, he had seriously considered a professional career in music. His love for people and his predictably charming and charismatic personality made him popular and a favorite amongst his family, friends and colleagues.

Mr. Greco’s love for quality service and products led to an illustrious career at The Fairmont Copley Plaza. As one of the longest tenured employees in its history, his career crossed many of the hotel’s departments and he was frequently sought after by regular guests, athletes and celebrities.

Though formal education eluded him, Mr. Greco recognized the important effect that learning and technology would have on our youth. He focused his attention on donating computers and technology to different high schools. He was recognized for his generosity and the “Anthony Greco Computer Lab” stands in his honor at the Jeremiah Burke School.

He leaves behind Maria, his wife of 60 years; his children Charles and Theresa Greco of Braintree, and Rosemarie and Norman Hanley of Weymouth; his brothers Guy of Malden, Vincent of Revere, and the late Sammy of New Jersey; his sisters Filomena Vellucci of New York and Anna DiBenedetto of the North End; seven grandchildren, Anthony Greco of Weymouth, Charles Greco of Braintree, Lisa Marie Greco, also of Braintree, Diane Hanley of Weymouth, Brian Hanley of Weymouth, Michael Hanley of Weymouth and Sarah Hanley, also of Weymouth; five Great-Grandchildren, and many, many friends who will miss him deeply.

A Funeral Mass was held at St. Leonard’s Church in the North End followed by entombment at Holy Cross Mausoleum, Malden. Arrangements were by the Boston Harborside HomeBoston Harborside Home J.S. Waterman & Son-Waring-Langone 617-536-4110

Jean Abrams Roberts

Active member of Boston community

Jean Abrams Roberts of Belmont, formerly of Boston, died December 30 after a long illness. She was 91 years old.

She was born in Bradford, PA in 1919 and graduated from Skidmore College in 1940 with an English major. She subsequently moved to Boston, where she met and in 1943 married Boston attorney George W. Roberts. Professionally, she served as an editor at the Massachusetts Dept. of Mental Health and at the New England Aquarium, where she also directed the volunteer program.  A former member of the corporation of the Church of the Advent on Beacon Hill, she also volunteered at the College Club of Boston, where she served as president, and at the USS Constitution Museum.

She is survived by a daughter, Susan R. Boyle of Boston, a son, Thomas A. Roberts of Albany, California, and two grandsons, Jason Roberts of Berkeley, CA and Colin Boyle of Boston.

A memorial service was held at the Old North Church, Boston.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Alzheimer’s Association, 311 Arsenal Street, Watertown, MA 02472.

Anna Palazzolo

Of Reading, formerly of the North End

Anna (Maniscalco) Palazzolo of Reading, formerly of Boston’s North End, died on December 30. She was 83 years old.

She was the beloved daughter of the late Filomena (Ragusa) and Mario Maniscalco; loving wife of the late Matteo Palazzolo; cherished mother of Joseph Palazzolo and his wife, Deborah, of Maynard, Rita Vansteensburg and her husband, Paul, of Saugus, and Phyllis DeAngelis and her husband, William, of Somerville; loving grandmother of nine and great grandmother of eight; beloved sister of Lucy Ciulla, Lillian Conti, Josephine Gasdia, and the late Vincenzo “Jim” Maniscalco and Margaret Aiello.

Funeral arrangements were by the Boston Harborside Home. Burial was at Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett. Donations in her name can be sent to the American Cancer Society.

Carmine Macri

Of Saugus, formerly of the North End

Carmine A. Macri of Saugus, formerly of the North End, died on December 30. He was 78 years old.

A US Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War, he was the husband of the late Louise (Ciampa) Macri; beloved father Marie Kulcsar of Florida, Carmine A. Macri Jr. and his wife, Ann Marie, of New Hampshire and Joanne Cataldo of Revere; brother of Anna Daly of Revere, Lucy Papa of the North End and the late Frank Macri; grandfather of eight and great grandfather of four.

Funeral arrangements were by the Bisbee-Porcella Funeral Home, Saugus. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery, Saugus.
