Corner Cafe regains softball crown

Dominant pitching by Steve "Donuts" Passatempo and an air tight team defense played key roles in re-capturing the North End Men’s Softball League Championship by Corner Cafe over Waterfront Cafe.

Corner Cafe wrapped up their season finishing in first place in the divisional season and went on to capture still another championship with scores of 3-1 and 10-3 in the finals.

The 2010 champs offense was led by the big bats of Vince DeNictolis, Dom DiCenso, Michael Murphy and Ryan Delabreeair.

The team also played their trademark lockdown defense that enabled them to capture multiple league championships including eleven in a row.

Infielders Stephen LaBella, Andrew Madden, Ricky Bevilacqua and Jim O’Connor gobbled up just about every ball hit in their direction taking away several hits from their opponents.

Steven Siciliano did his usual stellar job patrolling centerfield.

However, most players felt the story of the 2 out of 3 game series was the dominance of Passatempo on the mound, allowing only four runs in the two games.

Passatempo baffled the Waterfront Cafe batters with his overpowering fastball and dancing knuckleball that left several batters talking to themselves on the way back to the bench area.

"Steve was as dominant as any pitcher has ever been in a championship series," Coach Ralph Martignetti said. "He just gives the team a feeling of invincibility when he’s on the mound."

Team Captain Jim O’Connor said, "Steve was at his best but the entire team played with an intensity we haven’t seen since the mid-90s."

Corner Cafe owner Richie Longo has the championship trophy displayed in the window of his business.

Corner Cafe has captured the North End Men’s Softball Championship twelve of the last fourteen seasons.
