Remembering John Vitagliano

To the Editor,

John Vitagliano spent a lifetime helping build Greater Boston. Through his work in transportation, he contributed to projects that improved mobility, strengthened connections, and helped shape the region we know today. His career included contributions to transportation improvements associated with Logan Airport, Massport, and the transformation of Greater Boston’s transportation network during a pivotal period in the region’s history. The impact of that work continues to be felt every day by millions of residents and visitors.

But those who knew him best will remember him for something far more personal: his unwavering belief in people.

John had a remarkable gift for encouraging others. He saw potential where others saw limitations and inspired those around him to think bigger, aim higher, and never lose sight of what was possible. Whether discussing transportation, public service, local politics, or life itself, he brought wisdom, perspective, and optimism to every conversation.

I was fortunate to know John as a mentor, confidante, trusted advisor, and dear friend. His counsel was invaluable, but it was his unwavering faith in others that set him apart. He believed in people, often before they fully believed in themselves.

In a lifetime of public service, I have had the privilege of working with many talented people, but few who combined wisdom, loyalty, and generosity of spirit as effortlessly as John. He celebrated the successes of others as enthusiastically as his own and was always willing to share his time, experience, and encouragement.

Yet his greatest legacy may be the countless lives he touched through his kindness, mentorship, and steadfast support. His influence can be found not only in the projects he helped build, but in the people he encouraged and inspired along the way.

The world has lost a bright light. Those of us who were fortunate enough to know John have lost a trusted friend and champion. But his example endures—in the family he cherished, the communities he served, and the many lives he touched.

For that, and for so much more, all of us whose lives were enriched by John’s friendship and guidance will remain forever grateful.
