City Council Approves Mayor’s 2020 Budget Proposal

A $3.49 billion City of Boston 2020 (FY 20) budget submitted by Mayor Martin Walsh has been approved by the Boston City Council.

The budget reflects a $170 million increase over last year, upholding the City’s record of proactive fiscal management.

“These important investments are a reflection of our shared priorities,” Mayor Walsh said.

Increased funding will allow the City to deliver on the promise of expanding new housing, school nurses, more pre-kindergarten seats, and resources to look at unsolved homicides.

Through the new budget, “The City can continue to set up for future success, moving toward with urgency on our long-term plans to address climate change, affordable housing, better transit, arts and schools,” according to the Mayor.

Ten percent of this budget will apparently be dedicated to projects that promote climate resilience. The budget will be used to support high quality education, immediate transportation investments, new units of permanent housing and increasing the size of the police force.
