North Washington Street Bridge Off-Peak Lane Closures

Work related activities are underway including utility operations on the 118-year-old North Washington Street Bridge, a $177 million project which carries traffic over Boston Harbor between the North End and Charlestown.

Overnight off-peak temporary lane closures public meetings will be scheduled for project, according to MassDOT.

The closures for the utility work will be conducted in ways that seek to minimize the impacts on commuters in the local communities.

Major construction efforts will likely begin in spring 2019.

MassDOT, the City of Boston and the contractor are exploring ways to reduce the overall impacts of the construction process and are committed to ensuring that construction work on the bridge is carried out in ways that accommodate residents and commuters throughout local neighborhoods.

In the spring of 2019, MassDOT will begin significant construction operations for the bridge renovations.

At this time and throughout most of the project, it is expected that motorists will have access to two travel lanes in the inbound direction towards the North End and one outbound lane towards Charlestown. Pedestrians and cyclist access will be maintained.

This traffic plan excludes periods when there will be one lane in each direction to allow crews to demolish a portion of the main truss span and replace it with a temporary span.

Construction is currently expected to be completed in 2023 according to MassDOT.

The full scope of work on the bridge includes replacing the existing structurally deficient bridge, providing multi—modal amenities including widened sidewalks, separated bicycle lanes, and bus rapid transit lanes, increasing intersection safety and capability, and improving the navigation of the channel.
