Many immigrants go to the North End/West End Neighborhood Service Center (NSC) to attend the English for Speakers of Other Languages program.

“These are people who mainly come to the North End or West End Neighborhood Centers to work and attend classes,” according to NSC Director Maria Stella Gulla.

The NSC reports that in 2017 more than 50 students enrolled from 19 different countries. Students attend three levels of weekday classes which enables them to work.

The program is funded through the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

Vidharta Deonarah, ESOL Coordinator, instructs the beginning classes and Donna Janian teaches the intermediate and advanced classes, according to the Center.

The students recently visited the North End Library, where the librarian took them on a detailed tour and together with her staff who helped them get library cards.

Students have been studying Paul Revere and North End history.
