NEWNC Supports Salem Street Fitness Studio

By Phil Orlandella

A request by Melina DiPaola, the owner and operator of the RIDE, 120 Commercial Street, to open a second fitness studio at 89 Salem Street was unanimously supported by the North End/Waterfront Neighborhood Council (NEWNC) at its monthly meeting held on Monday, May 8 in the Nazzaro Community Center.

The fitness studio called “KO North End” will focus on boxing skills and exercise as part of a fitness program.

Hours for the new business will be Monday through Sunday 6 AM to 8 PM. The facility will be fully soundproofed. Music will be played but there will be no televisions or other forms of media. No opposition appeared at the public meeting.

NEWNC President John Pregmon introduced some of the six candidates running for election to serve two-year terms on the neighborhood board.

The 2017 election has six seats open so all the six candidates will automatically be elected on the Saturday May 20 election being held in the Nazzaro Center from 10 AM to 2 PM.

Pregmon when asked why the Council didn’t just cast one-vote for each candidate and avoid a useless election, he said “NEWNC by-laws call for an election.”

Basically, the only thing to report is who topped the ticket and how many people turned out to vote. Candidates include: Carmine Guarino, Tina Natali, Sean Hennessey, Tania Green, Damien DiPaola and Ashley McCarthy.

Alsha Johnson from the Housing Division at Inspectional Services spoke on rental registration that will take place this year. She noted that all Boston landlords must present the city with the number of rental units existing on their property.

Board members Michael Bonetti and Carmine Guarino spoke on Tuesday, June 13 about Saint Anthony candlelight procession and other activities. They also updated the Saint Leonard Parish renovation project.

Sal Gesamondo and Justin Amoroso spoke about the annual Anthony “Wrinkles” Memorial Street Hockey Tournament being held in the DeFilippo Playground on Sunday, June 4 starting at 10 AM. All proceeds will benefit The Fund for Autistic Children.

The next NEWNC monthly public meeting will be held on Monday, June 12 at 7pm in the Nazzaro Community Center, 30 North Bennet Street.
