Mayor Files Executive Order to Regulate Short-Term Rentals

By Phil Orlandella

While lawmakers are currently dealing with legislation dealing with short-term rentals, (one filed by North End/Waterfront State Representative Aaron Michlewitz) Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh has filed an executive order directing Inspectional Services, Assessing and other departments to identify where and how for prevalent commercial short-term rental listings are in the city and to make sure the units are not violating city occupancy zoning code.

“The executive order is an important step toward a comprehensive policy to address commercial short-term retail operations,” the Mayor noted in a statement recently released.

“By studying and developing the impact the City of Boston will ensure a system that works for property owners, visitors and our neighborhoods,” Walsh’s statement read.

State lawmakers are seeking new rules for the industry including higher taxes and other policies and regulations.
