Council President Wu and Walsh Propose Entertainment Assistance for Small Businesses

A proposal to expand the “Acoustic on Main” pilot program allowing small businesses in designated business districts to host acoustic performances without obtaining a live entertainment license from the City of Boston has been filed by City Council President Michele Wu, and supported by Mayor Martin J. Walsh.

The ordinance aims to increase foot traffic to neighborhoods, bolsters small businesses and further support the vibrant arts community in the city according to the ordinance.

“By eliminating red tape for acoustic performances in small businesses, we hope to create more opportunities for residents and visitors to entice customers to shop local,” President Wu said in a press release.

The proposed ordinance, if enacted, will go into effect on January 1, 2017 and requires businesses to be registered and licensed, limit performances to the hours of 10 AM to 10 PM, only allows for one microphone to be used and no more than five acoustic performers or musicians at a single venue at one time.

“Promoting our talented artists while bolstering our small businesses here in Boston is a win-win,” said Mayor Martin J Walsh in a press release. “With performances in bakeries and restaurants, local shops and non-profits, the best of Boston is showcased when artist in local businesses come together in our communities.”

            The low risk way for businesses to hire entertainment provides an opportunity for musicians and other performers to showcase their talents while driving customers to local businesses.
