BWSC to Start Phase II of North End Project

By Phil Orlandella

Now that Boston Water and Sewer Commission (BWSC) has completed Phase I of its projects in the North End, they have started Phase II which will run through November 2018.

The BWSC project involves replacement of water mains and rehabilitation of sewer and drainage pipes on twelve North End streets.

This is the second of three planned projects intended to improve the water distribution system and to upgrade aging sewerage and drainage system in the neighborhood.

According to BWSC, the anticipated impacts include water service interruptions, dust, traffic and parking modifications, rodent activity and general construction impacts.

The contractor will reportedly be required to minimize impacts to the extent feasible.

Proposed work includes replacement of 2,450 feet of combined sewers and 3,000 feet of water mains, plus trenchless rehabilitation of about 820 feet of combined sewers.

Work will take place on Snow Hill, Hull, Sheafe, Tileston, Hanover, Richmond, North, Sun Court Streets and Hanover Avenue, North Square, Jerusalem and Baldwin Place. Work will begin at 8am and conclude at 4pm each day.

In addition, temporary restoration of roadways, sidewalks and other areas disturbed by construction will be completed under the contract.

According to BWSC Commissioner of Construction Irene Sweeney all the necessary community notifications will take place, police details will be hired for the duration of the project and most importantly, parking spaces will be returned to the community at the end of the workday.

Members of the North End/Waterfront Residents’ Association (NEWRA) were pleased with Sweeney’s presentation and the accurate information she provided on the project.
