Three Arrests Reported at North End Public Safety Meeting

The start of the good weather season has been relatively quiet in the North End, according to Captain Ken Fong of District A-1 police at the monthly Public Safety meeting. Citywide crime statistics are down 2% year-to-date though the end of May and district wide figures were reported down 4%.

There were several larcenies in the North End area during the past 30 days. An iPhone went missing at Battery Wharf as did two packages, one on Tileston Street and the other at a North Square residence. A car was also broken into on Richmond Street where a backpack, three iPhones and a pen were reported stolen. On Endicott Street, a victim heard someone open doors to apartments. She reported seeing two males in the rear who have yet to be identified.

Detective Chuck Wilson reported they are following a suspect regarding the recent increase in package larcenies, but do not have enough evidence to make an arrest yet. Police encourage residents to report future incidents to 911.

Three arrests were made in the North End over the past 30 days:

• On Cooper Street, in the early morning on May 21st, police responded to a loud party disturbance reported by a neighboring resident. A combative male suspect was arrested after reports that he and party guests had been jumping from roof to roof on Cooper Street disturbing the people who lived there. The neighbor photographed the entire incident and forwarded it to the responding officers. The suspect was drunk and combative, placed under arrest for disturbing the peace and interfering with a police officer while speaking with witnesses.

• On May 29th at 8:15 p.m., officers responded to a call on Endicott Street for a male acting crazy and carrying a knife. On arrival the suspect was in the street acting irrational and arguing with pedestrians. No knife was found, but the suspect was arrested for being a disorderly person and in possession of Class E pills.

• At 585 Commercial Street on May 19th at 1:19 a.m., a traffic stop revealed an outstanding Rhode Island warrant and the suspect was arrested.

Boston Police reported on recent large scale events, including Boston Calling at City Hall Plaza. BPD did not receive any complaints from North End residents directly related to the concert where 20,000 people attended. Boston Calling will move to Allston next year.

Residents made some complaints about student move-ins/outs at the meeting. Maria Lanza from the Mayor’s Office said residents can call 311 for special trash pickups. Suffolk University’s annual move-in will be the week before Labor Day, coincident with the St. Anthony’s feast.

North End Public Safety meetings are held on the first Thursday of the month, 6:00 p.m. at the Nazzaro Center, 30 N. Bennet Street. Residents concerned with public safety and crime issues are encouraged to attend and talk with Boston Police District A-1.
