NEWNC Approves License Transfer to Hanover Street Business

By Phil Orlandella

The North End/Waterfront Neighborhood Council (NEWNC) had a busy agenda  in addition to  hosting the public meeting of North End residents opposing the relocation of elderly living in the North End Senior Home on Fulton Street.

Vin and Vigor, Inc. d/b/a The Wine Bottega on Hanover Street received support from the neighborhood group to transfer the 7-Day Wine and Malt beverage package license from Kerri Platt to Kimberly Scott.

An update on the dog recreation park to be built in the DeFilippo Playground which abuts Prince and Snow Hill Streets was presented by Kelly Thomas, Project Manager of the dog park.

Completion of the park will most likely take place in the spring of 2017.

While a dog park, all residents are welcome to visit the facility, according to Responsible Urbanites For Fido (Ruff) a group of community canine owners who worked diligently to secure this park with several city departments and other agencies.

Residents appeared to like the design and regulations put in place including cleanup and trash removal.

For informational purposes, Karen Johnson, AICP, Charter Realty and Development Corporation presented a possible project to demolish the existing structure, (a one-story, commercial use with three residential levels) at 198 Hanover Street and replace it with a one-story building with four ground level commercial spaces but not replacing the residential units.

Project runs from Salem and Cross Streets to Hanover Street with a height of 35 feet at its highest point.

Located across The Greenway, the Corporation will present its plans to the city but no space has   been committed to any business as yet.

“This is the gateway to the North End and residents need to be involved with the selection of potential business selection,” Jorge Mendoza said. “It must conform to the favor of the community and local residents or businesses must be involved every step of the way,” he added.

One resident said “The design looks like the Seaport District and is not right for the North End.”

The next NEWNC monthly meeting will be held on Monday, July 11 at 7pm in the Nazzaro Community Center.
